New Aggreko initiative drives hydrogen power

28 October 2021

Temporary power specialist Aggreko has launched a Greener Upgrades initiative that will see the launch of new products including hydrogen powered generators and an online emissions estimator.

Greener Upgrades will see the company invest £30m by year end to accelerate uptake of sustainable on-site solutions and new tech.

Aggreko going green Greener Upgrades is designed to help accelerate uptake of sustainable on-site solutions and new technologies.

Among the new releases will be hydrogen power generation units and fuel cells integrated with battery storage, to form a 45kVA hybrid solution.

Aggreko also recently tested a 50 kVA hydrogen combustion genset demonstrator, produced in partnership with hydrogen solutions developer CMB.TECH.

The company is now investing in 10 additional units and is also working with customers and partners to validate hydrogen use for temporary power.

A fuel cell demonstration unit is also in development to enable the use of zero-emission hydrogen technology in Aggreko’s canopy storage battery solution.

This follows the release of ultra-low emission Stage V generators, compliant with the Medium Combustion Plant Directive (MCPD) under the European Commission’s Clean Air Policy Package.

Meanwhile the launch of a new online estimator over coming months will enable sustainability savings on site by measuring the level of reduction of CO2, local emissions, and fuel, Aggreko confirmed.

The tool is intended as an indicator of what could be possible ahead of a full assessment of the project.

Greener Upgrades is part of Aggreko’s broader Net Zero strategy to reduce diesel fuel used by customer solutions by at least 50% and local air quality emissions in its solutions by 50%, while reaching net zero emissions across its operations, by 2030.

The company has recently launched a number of low emissions products, such as battery storage systems designed to reduce thermal generator runtimes.

Chris Rason, Managing Director of Aggreko, described managing the energy transition as “by far one of the biggest challenges for industry today.”

“While recent events have made changes more difficult, there is now an opportunity to ‘build back better’ by choosing equipment that can kickstart a green construction boom.

“We are privileged to be already supporting many on their journey and welcome any new conversations as a result of this initiative.”
