Rheinmetall, PolyCharge set up JV

NanoLam capacitors NanoLam capacitors have a prismatic shape, ideal for challenging fit requirements

Rheinmetall is to set up a joint venture with US-based start up PolyCharge America to produce, develop and market DC-link capacitors.

The Dusseldorf-based company reports the move is intended to give it a stronger position in the electromobility and industrial applications sectors and respond to demand from customers in the automotive industry and military. It will also provide access to the components necessary to develop innovative future products.

Now under development, the Rheinmetall PowerPack system for EVs features advanced capacitors from PolyCharge.

The JV will be 75% owned by Rheinmetall, which has also agreed to take a 13% share in PolyCharge. The JV will further allow the production and marketing of PolyCharge NanoLam capacitors in Europe.

The new capacitors use nanolaminate technology that involves sub-micrometre dielectric polymer coatings that support optimum cooling and improved performance. Advantages of the units include thermal stability, longevity and high output density.

Speaking about the new deal, Rene Gansauge, chief executive of Rheinmetall’s Sensors and Actuators division, said: “Advanced NanoLam technology lets us offer a product that’s substantially smaller and lighter than the conventional solutions, and which can operate at higher temperatures. This is a clear technological advantage, assuring that Rheinmetall PolyCharge is well positioned to meet the growing demand for these technologies.”
