AxleTech In Another E-Powertrain Collaboration

By Mike Brezonick09 October 2017

AxleTech International, the global supplier of powertrain technology and systems, has announced yet another collaboration with a significant supplier of heavy-duty electric transportation technology. The Troy, Mich., headquartered AxleTech has teamed with Proterra to develop and manufacture a new electric drivetrain system for zero-emissions buses.

Proterra designed and developed a drivetrain system for its Catalyst E2 electric bus and worked with AxleTech for its engineering and manufacturing expertise to deliver a drivetrain designed to provide optimal operating and packaging efficiency. The fully-integrated powertrain with new two-speed gearboxes is a major contributing factor in achieving a 20% efficiency improvement over the previous generation powertrain, AxleTech said.

“The partnership on Proterra’s new drivetrain system has been one of the cornerstone programs for our e-axle solutions. The new drivetrain is just the beginning of our relationship with the Proterra team,” said Jason Gies, director of Business Development, Electric Powertrain Systems, at AxleTech.

The collaboration with Proterra is just the latest in AxleTech’s moves in the e-powertrain space. In mid-September, the company announced a partnership with TM4, Boucherville, Québec, to develop integrated electric axles for heavy-duty vehicles.

AxleTech has sales responsibility and TM4 will assist with bringing in new leads from its various customer bases. The first products are scheduled for the third quarter of 2018.
