Dana Inc. has acquired Pi Innovo LLC, a Michigan-based supplier of embedded software solutions and electronic control units for the light vehicle, commercial vehicle and off-highway markets. Dana acquired a non-controlling interest in late 2020. No financial details were provided.
Headquartered near Detroit, Dana said the acquisition of Pi Innovo enables it to increase its in-house electrodynamics capabilities and electrification product portfolio by adding a strong library of turnkey electric vehicle application software, vehicle level controllers and auxiliary controllers.
“The extremely talented and experienced Pi Innovo team have provided exceptional modular software and controls solutions for original equipment manufacturers for more than 25 years,” said James Kamsickas, Dana chairman and CEO. “Integrating Pi Innovo with Dana’s leading e-Propulsion software capabilities will further enhance our ability to provide value for our customers as they continue to accelerate their electric vehicle portfolio development.”
Dana said the software and controls expertise of PI Innovo builds on its robust capabilities in designing, engineering, and delivering complete vehicle integration for e-propulsion systems, further positioning the company as a leader in vehicle electrification.
Pi Innovo’s heritage dates to 1990, when it was formed as Pi Technology Ltd by Pi Research Ltd in Cambridge, U.K. to design and develop heavy-duty diesel engine control hardware and software for the U.S. market, initially for Detroit Diesel Corp.
In 1999 it was acquired by Ford Motor Co. as part of the Premier Automotive Group acquisition of Pi Group and relocated to Michigan. In 2004 it returned to independent ownership as part of Ford’s divesture of Pi Group to PKV Racing and Pi Innovo LLC was formed in 2011 as a result of a management buyout.
