Dana introduces new e-transmission at ConExpo 2023

Dana has held the North American debut of the Spicer Electrified eSP502 e-transmission at the ConExpo 2023 trade show in Las Vegas. The unit will support the electrification of mid-size wheel loaders, rough terrain cranes and other off-highway machines.

The eSP502 e-transmission features a dual motor, two-speed design that supports optimised performance in a compact package. This can also be adapted to use a single motor, with optional power take-off, dependent on vehicle requirements.

With dual- or single-motor options, the platform can be used on 4x2 or 4x2 drive configurations. The dual-motor version delivers continuous power up to 326 hp (240 kW), while the single-motor variant returns 187 hp (140 kW).

Also at ConExpo, Dana has introduced a new modular driveline for telehandlers. With a lift capability up to 5400 kg/12000 lb, the units further feature a Spicer drobox for high-power hydrostatic motors.

This has a continuously variable transmission without torque interruption. According to Dana, this delivers enhanced performance, with precise manoeuvring at low speeds and reduced fuel consumption. Other features include an integrated spring hydraulic release parking brake.

The system includes Spicer 222 heavy-duty axles at the front and rear. There is also a limited-slip differential, plus ‘maintenance free’ brakes. The complete driveline is optimised to reduce noise, vibration and harshness (NVH).

To support anticipated demand, Dana is planning to almost triple annual production of its Spicer Torque-Hub track drives at the manufacturing and assembly plant in Lafayette, Indiana.

Spicer Torque-Hub drives for CTLs have torque ratings ranging from 5000 to 17,000 Nm. The expanded production output is expected to launch in Q2 2023.
