Danfoss’ Editron division and Junttan, a manufacturer of hydraulic pile driving rigs, have teamed up to deliver the PMx2e, described as being the world’s first fully-electric pile driving rig.

The battery-powered PMx2e is designed to match the operational performance of a diesel-powered rig in equivalent conditions. As a result, the machine offers the same structure and usability, but with more power and instant torque.

According to information from Junttan, the PMx2e pile driver has a hammer winch capacity of 12,000 kg (10,000 kg, pile). The motor delivers 266 kW of continuous power. Maximum pile length is 20 metres (66 ft).

The PMx2e features an Editron PMI375-T1100 electric motor and an ABB HES880-series invertor. The system is said to consume less energy per pile than a diesel equivalent, while also producing less noise and zero emissions.

Per Aarsleff, through its Swedish subsidiary Aarsleff Ground Engineering, commissioned the electric pile driving rig. It is expected that the machine will enter series production in 2022.

The introduction of electric machines should help construction companies decarbonise and achieve respective net-zero targets.
