Hamm to meet 2023 sustainability target

Compaction equipment specialist Hamm is on course to meet a key environmental target next year.

Dirk Pressgott, Hamm’s plant manager, said, “By implementing numerous individual measures, by 2023 we will have reduced the waste per produced machine by approximately 20% compared with 2019.”

Hamm, which received its ISO 14001 environmental certification a year ago, has incorporated several processes and systems in recent years to improve the sustainability of its operations, with a particular focus on manufacturing. 

Its production plant in Tirschenreuth, located in northeast Bavaria, Germany, has a geothermal heating and cooling system that has lowered its CO2 output by roughly 86 tonnes a year since its installation in 2013.

Its manufacturing line also uses a painting process that “reduces the amount of paints and solvents used”, and the company further saves energy by recovering brake energy from each new machine that rolls of the production line, via recuperation at the test bench.

Hamm’s proactive approach to sustainability has also seen the company reduce its paper use by 70% annually, thanks to a “print on demand” rule, and save additional energy by switching to electric forklift trucks and LED lights – this has resulted in an 80-tonne reduction in CO2 output a year.

Dr Stefan Klumpp, member of the Executive Board of Hamm AG, said, “Protecting the environment is vital for us. This applies not only to our operations as a manufacturing company, but also to our products.”

With regard to its equipment models, which can run on non-fossil fuels such as biodiesel or hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), Hamm’s rollers now incorporate biodegradable hydraulic oils, oscillation technology and power trains with consumption-reducing technology. 

Digital technologies that optimise equipment operation have also been designed to lower carbon emissions.
