MAN Engines’ decarbonization solutions for workboats at SMM

MAN Engines will exhibit the MAN Smart Hybrid Experience as well as a dual-fuel hydrogen engine with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system – both targeted at reducing CO2 emissions in workboats – at its stand at SMM 2022. SMM is a leading international trade fair for the maritime industry that will take place in Hamburg from September 6 to 9.

Initially introduced for yacht applications, the MAN Smart Hybrid Experience can also be combined with the company’s marine engines in the current D2862 (V12/24.2 L), D2868 (V8/16.2L) and 12.4 L D2676 (R6/12.4 L) series to upgrade output for light-, medium- and heavy-duty applications in commercial shipping, said MAN Engines. This enables overall system outputs for each driveline ranging from 200 hp to 2500 hp (147 kW to 1838 kW) and degrees of hybridization of up to 71% of the total output.

The MAN Smart Hybrid Experience connects a conventional marine engine to either a 184 kW or 368 kW electric motor (up to 96% efficiency rating). The permanent-magnet synchronous motor/alternator (160 mm long at 184 kW or 320 mm at 368 kW with a diameter of 560 mm) connects to the engine via an electromagnetic clutch, with the marine gearbox in turn flanged to this via another clutch. The electromagnetic clutch enables the engine operating mode to be changed during operation, even as an emergency function, without power interruption.

The high-voltage batteries used in the plug-in hybrid system are charged via the integrated shore connection or by the diesel engines or onboard generator sets when the boat is on the move.

The MAN Smart Hybrid Experience to be displayed at SMM will be based on the D26 inline six-cylinder engine with a 184 kW electric motor and aftertreatment system. In this combination, system output of up to 1100 hp (809 kW) can be achieved.

In addition, MAN Engines will present a dual-fuel hydrogen engine with SCR system at the event. A MAN D2862 LE448 12-cylinder diesel engine rated 1019 hp (749 kW hp) at 2100 rpm has been prepared for dual-fuel operation and supplemented with a hydrogen injection system from development partner CMB.TECH.

The first two models of the new dual-fuel hydrogen engine were delivered on May 10, 2022, for series operation powered by hydrogen on a workboat.
