Peugeot starts production of fuel cell e-Expert vans

Peugeot has started production of its first hydrogen vehicle, the e-Expert Hydrogen panel van. The fuel cell variant joins the existing battery-electric and internal combustion range.

The new e-Expert uses a hydrogen fuel cell in combination with a 10.5 kWh battery pack. Refuelling the three underfloor tanks with compressed hydrogen at 700 bar takes three minutes.

A full tank of hydrogen returns a range of 249 miles (400 km), at a maximum speed of 80 mph (approx. 130 km/h).

The system has two sets of batteries. In addition to the propulsion system battery which takes charge from the fuel cell, another pack is located under the seats. This can be charged using the plug-in function, while also storing charge from regenerative systems. When full, this pack alone delivers a range of about 50 km.

The fuel cell electric powertrain is located in the engine compartment and underbody, resulting in no loss of load volume in comparison to a standard diesel variant. In addition, it is said to have a lower centre of gravity, improving stability and safety.

Th fuel cell and hydrogen storage system was developed by Faurecia. The ‘mid-power’ drivetrain is a result of a collaborative effort between Stellantis (Peugeot parent company) and Symbio.

The e-Expert is available in standard and long bodystyles, each having a maximum payload of 1000 kg and a towing capacity of 1000 kg.

Peugeot puts forward that this makes it a ‘practical, zero-emissions solution for a variety of businesses and fleets’.

The Peugeot e-Expert is assembled at the Stellantis Centre of Competence Hydrogen & Fuel Cells in Russelsheim, Germany. Peugeot says that is working with energy suppliers to ‘propose package deals’ related to sourcing hydrogen fuel.
