Hybrid all terrain crane new from Zoomlion

Chinese manufacturer Zoomlion has launched what it claims is the world’s first all terrain crane with a hybrid power train.

The 220 tonne capacity ZAT2200VE863 launched on 11 April 2022 has an 85 metre boom and is on a five axle carrier. It has an internal combustion engine and an electric motor. With a combined power output of 360 kW the drive system is more powerful than a conventional diesel-hydraulic model of that size, Zoomlion said.

A choice of three modes is available for lifting operations: purely battery-electric, plugged in to a 380 Volt mains electricity supply, or by combustion engine. Running time on the battery is given as eight hours.

Petrol power
Unusually for a commercial vehicle these days, the engine is fuelled by petrol (gasoline). A fuel saving of 35 per cent is claimed over conventional diesel cranes because the engine is smaller and runs at a constant speed, driving a generator to produce electricity for the motors and to charge the batteries.

Commenting on the development Luo Kai, Zoomlion vice president and general manager at the engineering crane division, said, “Driven by policy incentives and market demand, the construction machinery industry is accelerating into the era of new energy, the ZAT2200VE863 is the latest achievement of Zoomlion’s innovative product R&D. The hybrid machinery products are low in fuel consumption, pollution and noise with high energy efficiency, and it’s conducive to promoting energy transformation and the technological upgrading of the industry.”

Early pioneer
The ZAT2200VE863 all terrain follows Zoomlion’s launch of a 25 tonne capacity fully battery-electric truck crane, the ZTC250N-EV, in May 2020.
