Sinopec starts construction of photovoltaic green H2 plant

China Petroleum & Chemical Company, or Sinopec, has held a launch ceremony for construction of what is billed as the world’s largest photovoltaic green hydrogen production project.

Representing an investment of about $470 million (3 billion yuan), the Xinjiang Kuqa Green Hydrogen Project is forecast to have an annual production of 20,000 tonnes of green hydrogen. This is expected to eliminate 485,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.

In addition, the project will contribute about $20.4 million to the local GDP and almost $3 million per year in tax revenue.

The plant will comprise five key sections: photovoltaic power generation; power transmission and transformation; hydrogen from water electrolysis; hydrogen storage; and hydrogen transport.

The photovoltaic power station will have a capacity of 300 MW and annual power generation of 618 million kWh. The 20,000-tonne output will be stored in a spherical 210,000 cubic metre storage tank with pipeline capacity of 28,000 cubic metres per hour.

The green hydrogen produced by the plant will replace that currently produced by Sinopec Tahe Refining & Chemical using natural gas and fossil energy.

Sinopec is currently China’s largest producer of green hydrogen, producing about 3.9 million tonnes of hydrogen per year.
