Speedy Hire is to rent hydrogen fuel-cell powered generators through a partnership with reneweable energy specialist AFC Energy.

The initial phase of the agreement will see Speedy cross-hire AFC Energy’s H-Power Tower Generators.

The two companies aim to form a 50/50 joint venture to rent the gensets. The JV will initially invest around £2.2 million in AFC’s 30 kW H-Power Generators, with the first sets scheduled to be available later this year.

Speedy said the two companies planned to increase orders “in line with the expected growing demand for zero emission power across the UK construction and temporary power market.”

Dan Evans, chief executive, Speedy, said, Speedy was a leader in product innovation and sustainability; “we are pleased to announce our proposed collaboration with hydrogen experts AFC Energy to deliver scalable, modular zero emission power generators to the UK market and further deliver on our ambitious targets in our Velocity sustainable growth strategy.”

Adam Bond, chief executive, AFC Energy, added, “The pressure to deliver zero emission power on construction sites here in the UK and overseas has seen strong growth in demand for AFC Energy’s H-Power Generators.

“Our collaboration with Speedy builds on the successful H-Power Tower launch last year and subsequent field-based deployments, many of whom are customers of Speedy, making our proposed collaboration all the more relevant.”

The joint venture is the latest move in hydrogen power that Speedy has made in the last month. The company also signed a deal with Niftylift to supply the world’s first hydrogen-electric powered self-propelled aerial work platform.

AFC Energy is a publicly traded company based in Cranleigh, Surrey, in the South East of the UK. It has been developing a range of fuel cell generators and has already worked on major UK construction sites with companies including Kier and Keltbray. It has also worked in Spain with contractor Acciona.
