Transfluid’s hybrid drive for Italian military patrol boat

By Roberta Prandi13 September 2021

The Italian Carabinieri military police force, a completely independent organization fully equipped with air force, land force and navy, ordered sixteen FSD N800 HY offshore patrol boats to Ferretti Security Division; the first boats are delivered and already operational in the Italian seas.

The N800 HY FSD is the first hybrid patrol boat to join the Carabinieri fleet, to be deployed for rescue and security operations and patrol coastal and territorial waters. The new vessel has a length of 16.75 m, a beam of 4.43 m and a draft of 1.57 m, with a hull made by composite materials consisting of glass-fiber and carbon-fiber.

Transfluid hybrid drive on Italian patrol boat The N800 HY FSD hybrid patrol boat of the Italian Carabinieri fleet features a parallel hybrid propulsion system by Transfluid

The patrol boat has a new generation hybrid propulsion system, easy to use and to switch from diesel mode to electric mode and vice versa with a very simple operation. This guarantees a significant reduction in emissions and total respect for the environment.

The hybrid system is a the Transfluid HM3350 parallel hybrid, integrated with Transfluid permanent magnet electric motors and LiFePO4 batteries. All these components are DNV-GL type approved.

The N800 HY FSD has an autonomy of about 1 hour at 7 knots and 2 hours at 5 knots; maximum speed is 8 knots in electric mode and 30 knots in diesel mode. With the latter, the total recharge of the batteries is carried out in about an hour and a half. The electric mode, in addition to saving fuel, also allows savings in maintenance costs thanks to the fact that the hours of use of the diesel engine are reduced.
